A Vast Left Wing Conspiracy?

After a few days of unbelievable amounts of rain in the D.C. area, we're starting to dig out and get back to normal again. We've basically received (in three days) approximately five times as much rain as we normally get for June and July combined. Amazingly enough, the basement seems to have held up well. In digging through some items that I need to get through, I found this story, which has amazingly gotten very little press. Apparently, there is a vast left-wing conspiracy, at least in the blogosphere.

It all started with an allegation that the two people who run the liberal blog Daily Kos, have been engaged in a "pay for play" scheme, where one of the two partners of that blog would be hired as a consultant by politicians, in return for favourable "press" on the Daily Kos blog. From there, Markos Moulitsas (the founder of the Daily Kos), issued a request for people to keep their mouths shut, and in a stunning feat for the lefty bloggers, they complied. Ultimately, this lead to New York Times columnist David Brooks writing an op-ed piece that slams the Daily Kos, and its founder Markos Moulitsas (unfortunately, I can't link to it because it's a Times Select piece, so you'd have to pay to read it). A good place to go for a summary of the whole thing (including links to commentary) is Raw Story.

Personally, I think that this whole thing proves two things. First, that Markos Moulitsas is an arrogant idiot who, for some unknown reason, thinks that he is somehow better than the rest of us because he runs this blog (which seems to be a real source for some extremely stupid opinions and "theories"). He's always quick to denounce people on the right (or any Republican, for that matter) for doing things that are somewhat shady. If nothing else, this shows that even he is not above hypocrisy. Remember how they pounced on those "journalists" that the Republicans paid to write favourable press? It's sort of like this whole business with Tom Delay too - hire his partner as a "consultant" and you'll get access to the big guy.

The second thing that this proves is the complete stupidity of the New York Times's idea of Times Select. This is actually a big story, and because it's behind the paid subscription wall, any impact it may have had, will be reduced by about half. I hope they realise just how stupid this idea is, and get rid of it. Every other national paper has a web site where you need to register, but it doesn't cost anything to read the paper. Why the New York Times has to do things differently, I don't know...
