You know, sometimes it's comforting that no matter how far I am from "home" (wherever that is), there are some things that just don't change. I suppose that's even comforting when those particular things infuriate me. For example, one thing that I've always said unites us as human beings is that we all consider ourselves good drivers. I've only met three people in my life who have actually claimed not to be a good driver.
Another thing I've noticed is that no matter how far I am from my roots, nobody ever seems to be able to walk properly (that is to say, without getting in my way). This is especially true when I have somewhere to be. A random guy dressed in chef whites and clogs running down the street wielding knives is not exactly someone whose way I would stand in. Yet they do it, and do it frequently. Why is that? I think it boils down to a much larger problem that I've noticed here in the land of pinko commie liberal hippies. It seems that nobody here is really paying attention to what is going on around them.
People are so wrapped up in their own little worlds that I think they really miss the big picture. Lately, the trend has been to hold demonstrations here that advocate the complete elimination of things. Two weeks ago, there was an "abolish the military" (yes, all of it) rally, and last week there was an "abolish all prisons" (unfortunately, I'm not kidding about this) protest. It really makes me wonder what kind of reality (or lack thereof) these people are living in. These people would be the first to complain if they were a victim of say, a violent crime, and the perpetrator was just allowed to keep going on doing the same thing to others.
Nobody really pays attention here to anything going on, and hence they live in their own little world. Then they look at me like I'm crazy because I plow right into them as they step into my way while I'm running for the bus....

Find out what their "solution" was?
Maybe it's brainwashing. I could get behind that.

I tried to ask. I couldn't tell you though. I believe the central dilemma for that is whether prisons serve to rehabilitate or to punish. Frankly, I think we should tie them to a sofa, and make them watch back-to-back episodes of Dr. Quinn: Medicine Woman...
